Soaps And Me
Greetings Soap Friends and Gentle Readers! This is my first Blog Post. Please bear with me as, at times it may be a bit scattered as well as, jumping from one tangent to the next. As time progresses, I am sure that my blogging skills will improve. Thanks again, for stopping by and reading. Feel free to comment.
I remember the first time I first started watching All My Children. I was about 13 years old and would spend lots of time at my friends house especially in the summer as they had a pool. At lunchtime we would sit at the kitchen table and have our lunch with my friend's Mom Laura. Laura loved All My Children and the TV that they had in the kitchen was in Black and White. We would watch AMC on that TV. We would wait breathlessly for the start when the original book would begin to open.... Oh how I loved that! And for the next 30 minutes we were glued to each line that was delivered by Erica, Mona, Dr. Tyler, Phoebe Tyler Wallingford, etc.... Back in the 80's AMC was still a 30 minute show it hadn't expanded to the hour format yet. I was hooked from day 1.
A few years had passed and I was still watching AMC and OLTL as well as GH. I scheduled my college classes around that 3 hour block. And to make sure that I watched Loving/TheCity again, I would skip class to watch.
I then realized here I am in NYC and this is where they taped AMC, Loving, OLTL and I could actually go to the studio and see if I could catch a glimpse of these delightful actors and actresses as they were going to the studio or coming out and the end of taping. In the beginning it was hard to figure out schedules however, as time progressed I learned that schedule. I made friends with one of the Security Guards and he would tell me who was about to come out. It was thrilling and breath taking.
I first met to my surprise Alyce Webb aka Mrs. Valentine. Bless her, she was just so wonderful and warm, receptive and down to earth. Beautiful woman who wasn't even a Contract player but a Day Player. I do believe she always remained that way. None the less, I was in heaven.
Time passed and I met Susan Lucci, David Canary and his wife Maureen, Julia Barr (Oh how I thought Brooke English looks taller on TV. LOL!), Kathleen Noone, Rob Gentry, Carmen Thomas, Michael E. Knight, Mary Fickett, Tasia Valenzia, Bill Timoney, Marcy Walker, Amanda Bearse, Kim Delaney, Darnell Williams, Debi Morgan, etc...
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Deborah Morehart aka Hunter Tylo even before she appeared on AMC as Robin McCall. She was picking up her first script. How amazing.....
Taylor Miller had vacated the role of Nina Cortlandt and they were bringing Nina back. So, who do I meet on her first day the recast of Nina in the form of Heather Stanford. Heather looked like Taylor in many ways and I believe that is why she was cast in the role. She didn't last too long in Pine Valley though. Heather was married in real life to a Minister. Extremely gracious when asked for her autograph. I never did think she was right for the role of Nina. Who am I to say who they should have hired.
Marcy Walker had left in the middle of a story line when she was working at WRCW and was interested in Cliff. They recast the role with Alice Haining. Nice girl however was definitely not the "Liza" that Marcy portrayed. Marcy owned that role no matter what. Again, Alice was a nice girl. Accommodating, Friendly and talkative. Alice would later go on to Loving to play Cecilia and then on to ATWT to play Angel. Colleen Dion stepped in to fill her shoes on Loving.
Then, Nina #3 came along still no Taylor Miller and stepping in was Barbara Kearns. Very pleasant to say the least. She had that Fire Red hair and she didn't last long. She went "bonkers" and fell in love with the Cortlandt driver and flunky Benny Sago. Next thing you know Nina #3 is leaving on a cruise with Daisy. So long Barbara Kearns. Last I heard she had done some theater and left acting.
I remember standing for hours outside the studio with that huge marquee overhead that said, "Anything Can Happen In Pine Valley" "All My Children Weekdays at 1:00 PM on WABC" Happy memories of days gone by. It was a shame that they moved the studio down to the old Ryan's Hope studio by the Hudson River.
Interestingly, I had actually got to the studio at about 8:00 AM and here comes a Black Town Car and who gets out but Ruth Warrick! At first, I wasn't sure who she was as this woman looked frail. She had on sunglasses and her hair in a kerchief. In her hand was a wig case. There was a gal who was there that I didn't know she was a huge fan as I was and I asked her, "Do you know who that was? Is she anyone?" Anyone! The girl responded that is just Phoebe Tyler Wallingford. I was in shock as I was not expecting Ms. Warrick to look so frail. However, by 12 noon after hair and make up she looked like a million bucks. And she came out to sign autographs for the fans for about 20 mins and would then go back inside.
Another time, I went to the pizzeria called "The Pizza Joint 2" with a few fans and there was a waitress that I swore was Kim Delaney. At this point Kim had left the show (died in that horrific speed boat accident). It was not Kim however, it was a girl that wanted to be a model, yet auditioned for AMC for the role of Jenny's look a like. Shelia. (I hated that storyline) however, our waitress would soon have that role. Yes, Cynthia Sullivan was that girl. Nice gig if you could get it.
To close this portion of my Blog for now, just know that I am wit you all in fighting to keep the Soap Genre alive and to bring back AMC and OLTL. Up next, OLTL and meeting the talented and gorgeous Fiona Hutchison.
I do hope that you enjoyed my first blog. Yes, I know it is not quite what we all expected. It is just my ramblings of things remembered and cherished. Please leave me a comment or two. Should I continue with a Blog????
